What we do

Beths Grammar School – Bexley Location

It’s My Life support young children and adolescents to work to achieve their full potential according to their age and ability.

Conductive education targets the areas that can be reasonably improved through conductive rehabilitation.

We work with infants, children of any age and young adolescents.

If parents are new to conductive education, they are invited to actively participate in supporting the child during the sessions so the parent understands the practical application of the conductive education practises.

Generally, our classes take the form of group classes of between 3 to 6 children who work together on a range of tasks and exercises that are tailored for them.

Simple tasks and exercises might be set for ‘homework’ to further improve development.

We run our classes on Saturdays and throughout most holidays.

Maidstone Location

We run a parent led class on Wednesday for preschool children called MOVE & Play.

It gives the child an introduction to conductive education methods in a relaxed atmosphere. The emphasis is on fun. We show the parent exercises to encourage mobility and strength.

What is conductive education?

Conductive Education is an educational system, based on the work of Hungarian Professor András Pető. It was specifically developed for children and adults who have motor disorders of neurological origin such as cerebral palsy.

Is conductive education a therapy?

Conductive education is not a therapy. It is an educational learning programme that adapts the persons needs to develop and improve functional skills throughout their life.

When can my child start conductive education?

Early intervention is key to a child development.
You can start conductive education as early as soon after birth, first with an initial consultation and then you can get some advice on how you can adapt and incorporate some of the conductive education principals in your daily routine with your very young child, as the child enjoys better health you can join the weekly sessions with the professionals and you can continue to grow and learn together throughout their lives.

How often does my child need conductive education?

It’s my life Charity operate on a term time basis.
At IML we work on Saturdays and half term intensive blocks, we offer group sessions. As conductive education is a learning programme, it is an educational system, it should be practised throughout the day in your child’s life and daily program as part of a functional learning system to help them to develop their independence and potential for life.

How long are sessions?

Our sessions are 1 hour long.
IML provides sessions for a number of groups per day, the sessions are limited to up to one hour long but in other conductive education settings you may experience a whole day routine where you can really immerse yourself into the in depth principals of conductive education. At IML we offer one-hour sessions that are aimed at to support and help the parents adapt this educational system into their lifestyle.

Do I take part in conductive education sessions?

Yes, we like encourage parents, care givers to take part in the sessions. Our conductors are there to guide you and assist during the sessions.
At IML you will be in the session and remain with your child especially at the early stages where the guide and learning system designed to help you as a parent to understand and to bring confidence to help your child to learn independent and function skills and movement which are tailored for your child specifically but at IML we learn this in a group environment so all parents feel more confidence in conversing about related topics.

How long do I need to attend conductive education to see results?

As conductive education is a learning programme aimed to help the service users to support the children throughout the whole life, it is a life-long learning programme which adapts and changes as the needs and functional skills development of the child changes.

How will conductive education help my child?

IML provides a conductive education service that targets and helps parents to better understand their own child’s needs and will continue adapts and will go through, with your child, the various developmental phases to help them develop their functional skills.

What does conductive education involve?

At IML conductive education is an hour-long group session environment with specialist equipment that are imitating real life environmental circumstances so your child may be sitting or learning to stand, step sideways or walking up and down small steps that are preparing your child to walk up and down stairs to get up to their bedroom

What equipment do I need for conductive education?

At IML we provide all the equipment necessary during our sessions.
You would probably like to bring along anything you have for your child in terms of leg gaitors, arm gaitors, specialist shoes, their specific walker or helmet if they use one already to protect them. However, you can turn up and we will do our very best.

What does my child need to wear for the session?

Wearing comfortable clothing is advised. You can also bring along specialist pieces which your child may wear such as leg/arm gaitors, Lycra suits, soft helmets, footwear etc.

What should I expect to happen during sessions?

We will provide weekly group sessions where you will be working along with other parents and their children, the lead conductor will lead a session which will involve a sequence of tasks that are designed to help your child learn functional skills, and also will be guided and learn how to best help and facilitate your child to achieve their potential in their physical development as well as communication, attention and learning task.

Do I need to do conductive education at home?

You do, this is an educational learning programme, it is a life style that you will adapt and incorporate into your daily lives, it won’t feel like you’re a doing a therapy or daily exercises, it will just become part of your and your child’s life.
